What type of SSL certificate do I choose?
The question arises as to which certificate to choose to go
to HTTPS and protect the connection. But the answer depends on the nature of
your site, to the extent that your security needs. For a lambda website where
personal data is not exchanged, there is quite a lot of free SSL certificates.
No more needed.
For a corporate site, it is advisable to choose a domain
verification certificate (DV) or an organization's audit (OV). These
certificates range from several tens of euros to several hundred euros a year.
The difference between them is authentication: DV does not identify the
applicant of the certificate, in contrast to the OB, which is a bit safer.
However, at this point, you must put yourself in the user's place: will he
click on your certificate to check the authentication field? Do you really need
this extra protection?
As for the e-commerce site, everything else: you need to
ensure the security of your customers throughout the shopping tunnel. An
expanded inspection certificate (EV) is important here. It displays a green bar
in the browser, which lets users immediately know that they are surfing on the
site that uses the best protection. Everything is good for your brand.
For certificates with multiple domains, they apply to sites
that must certify multiple domain names.
Finally:
Moving your website to HTTPS is not an absolute necessity,
but rather with comfort and trust. Installing an SSL certificate on your server
will not increase your SEO or turn your site into a hacked protection fort (SSL
encrypts the connection without protecting the server or browser as such). But
this will allow your visitors to feel secure when they trust you with personal
information, be it the registration data or bank details. Note that 40% of
sites on Google's first page are in HTTPS.
Recommendation:
Do not run migration without prior display regardless of the
chosen solution, the required certificate and the selected certification
authority. First of all, do not hurry!
